Harmony

There was a time when the music I loved to listen to was usually from male groups. I can't call them boy bands, but groups who specialize in vocal harmonies. I love hearing all these different voices come together. The combination of voices makes a sound so beautiful and unique that I never get tired of listening to them.

Boyz II Men is my favorite male vocal harmony group. There were a lot of other groups who had the same style back in their day. Out of all of them, I found that Boyz II Men's songs were my go-to when it came to that genre. Boy bands like *NSYNC, 98°, and Backstreet Boys also had their share of great songs in this category.

What I love about songs that feature vocal harmonies is the simplicity. They did not need too much instrumental background or effects. It was the combination of voices that made the song work. And because of that simplicity, the song feels more intimate and sincere when you’re listening to it.

It’s amazing how vocal harmony groups work. The idea of these harmonies made me think about how I wish we could all apply the idea of this to our daily lives. Think about it. Vocal harmony groups are a combination of people with varied and unique voices. In our daily lives, we are all surrounded by different types of people. Everyone with different ways, styles, and voices.  If we can come together the way these vocal harmony groups do with a song, the world could be a better place.

Vocal groups have members who recognize the part they play in the unit. They accept their unique voice, and they own it. Each member then works together with the rest of the group to produce something good. They don’t sing to outshine anyone else or for more time in the spotlight. They all know their part and how doing it right contributes to making a good song.

In a vocal harmony group, no one is better than the other. Missing one part of the vocal harmony messes with how it all sounds in the end. As they say in acting, there are no small roles, only small actors. In the same way, each part of a vocal harmony group plays an important part in making a song work.

If we take that to our day-to-day lives, I see it as this: first, recognizing who we are. Being aware of our identity/personality, talents, and abilities. It includes also knowing our limitations. It’s not always easy, we’ve all had moments of self-doubt where we do not know who we are. And it’s hard to contribute to society when you don’t recognize or become aware of what part you want to play in it. But when we do, it makes things easier.

The second is about ego. It might be tempting for people in vocal harmony groups to think that one role is better than the other. Or that one person deserves more parts than the other. Letting go of that ego, and letting go of the individual for the sake of the group is a challenge. I say that not only for vocal harmony groups but for life in general. We live in a world where many place so much value on ego and image, so stepping back like that might not be a given.

Last, it’s also about knowing how we can work with other people. It all boils down to working well with others. That’s what harmony is all about.  It's about uniting with others at the point when we are self-aware and able to let go of our egos for the common good.

Be it in a vocal group or real life, harmony is important. Knowing who we are, where we stand, and how we work with everyone else is important in finding that harmony. Imagine if we all worked together instead of doing it for ourselves. If we all had that kind of harmony in life, how much better could the world be?

There is so much beauty in vocal harmonies. To see that concept of harmony work in real life would be amazing.
